Two fewer chickens...

And one very happy hawk. We've been a little sad around here because we lost two chickens--George, a silver-laced Wyandotte and Hawk-Chicken, a very feisty Easter Egger, to a young hawk.

We're not sure what to do about the hawk. Now that he's had a taste of chicken, he'll be back. We may have to get a rooster (they're good at sounding the danger alarm) and perhaps putting up an aviary. The hawk probably will mean that the girls' days of pure freedom are numbered.

edited to add: The toll turned out to be four chickens. The hawk got one more, and we think a neighbor's dog got the fourth. Unfortunately, the chicken gotten by the dog was Queen Penny, our huge Buff Orpington who ruled the flock. The other hens are all looking to move up to the top position, so we've had a few chicken fights. Seems that Lucy, a Delaware, may now be top bird.
