Frozen eggs--and everything else

It's cold. Really, really cold.

You know, if you really want to stop conversation at work, just mention that you greased up your hens. Actually, covering their combs with petroleum jelly is supposed to help protect against frostbite. I hope so, because I didn't enjoy doing it, and they were not appreciative of my efforts.

The hens are in their chicken palace, with two heat lights. We still need to de-ice their water twice a day, and we had frozen eggs yesterday. I expect more frozen eggs today, since it's even colder today.

I felt sorry for them this morning, so I made them a big batch of multi-grain hot cereal, with leftover macaroni and cheese thrown in. Sometimes the chickens yell at you--"Bawk! Bawk! Bawk!" I think it translates to "Hey! Lady! Where are my treats?!?!" After the hot cereal this morning Mike said it was more like they were murmering happily. I guess that means they liked it.
