Chicks, Chicks and More Chicks

This year's chick order came from Murray McMurray Hatchery this past Monday. All the chicks look healthy, but they shorted us five chicks. :(

That's OK, though--the eggs in the incubator are due to hatch on May 3rd. We candled them again recently and it was really cool--you could see the little chicks wiggling around in the eggs. I always look forward to seeing chicks that were bred here on the farm.

And if that wasn't enough, we have a hen that's gone broody and wants to sit on some eggs. Last night we moved her to the isolation pen so she can have some peace. All the other hens were crowding her out of the nest in the chicken house. Right now she's sitting on some golf balls while we decide what to do with her. We could give her some eggs to hatch, but I'm inclined to give her some of the chicks that hatch from the eggs in the incubator instead. Since hens can't count and have no idea how long they've been sitting on eggs, we should be able to pull the golf balls out and stick some chicks under her, and she'll just think her "eggs" hatched!

We'll post chick photos soon. We've been a bit crazy this week, but we will get it done. They are so cute!
