Meat Birds and Chicks from the Incubator

All of our reservations for meat birds are taken for the first batch this year. They are growing well and will be moved out of the brooder into the grass next weekend. If you're disappointed that you missed this round, contact us at orders@redwicket.com and make a reservation. Once we have 20 birds reserved, we'll order the chicks. Chickens are ready to process about 10 weeks after we make the order.

The babies from the incubator are doing really well. The are super cute, and much friendlier than the chicks we usually order from the hatchery. I'm not sure why, but it could be because they saw us right out of the shell, so they trust us.

All of the egg-layer babies are starting to feather out really well. Once most of their feathers come in they will be moved out to a mobile coop with an open bottom so they can be safe while they start learning to eat weeds and grass and bugs and learning to be chickens. They'll need a heat lamp in the evenings for a couple of weeks, though. They will start to lay eggs at around 18-20 weeks old.

We haven't gotten our garden in yet--it's been pouring rain about ever third day here, so the garden never dries out. Hope everyone out there has done better in the garden than we have!
