She really, REALLY likes pumpkin. Luckily for her, we still have a few left from the 2012 harvest.
The chickens like pumpkin, too--but this was a very cold, windy day, so they ran out after the pumpkin, stopped in their tracks, and turned right back around and crowded back into the hen house. I took pity on them and put a bunch of pumpkin inside for them.
Other than occasional treats, life at Red Wicket is pretty slow paced this time of year. I'm spending a lot of time with my seed catalogs, dreaming of spring. I always plant my old standbys, of course:
- San Marzano paste tomatoes
- Sun Gold cherry tomatoes
- Brandywine Pink, Cherokee Purple and Big Beef slicing tomatoes
- Butterbeans soybeans to eat as edamame
- Sweet Gourmet Lebanese summer squash (light green, and WAY tastier than regular zucchini)
- Sugar Snap peas
but everything else is open to experimentation. That means that I spend literally HOURS debating the pros and cons of various varieties before I finally make my seed order. I'd better hurry since I need to start the tomato and pepper seeds next week. I'll let you know what I finally decide. There is one guarantee--my seed order will be WAY larger than I initially planned, and Mike will roll his eyes at me. :)
